The village, the harbour, the castle and the wine that made Valtenesi famous.
Moniga is a town of a few thousand inhabitants overlooking the Brescia side of Lake Garda, in the heart of Valtenesi. It doesn't have the fame of Sirmione or Salò, and that is precisely why it has remained authentic: mornings begin with the smell of bread, evenings end with a walk at the harbour. In the centre you will find shops, bars, small restaurants and a square where time seems to flow more slowly.
The tourist harbour of Moniga is the heart of the village: from here boats leave for lake tours and scheduled ferries connecting Sirmione, Salò, Garda and Desenzano. Along the lakefront you will find fish restaurants, pizzerias, ice cream parlours and bars to stop at sunset. From the Relais it is a 3-minute walk.
The castle of Moniga dates back to the 10th century and is one of the best preserved on the Brescia side. It dominates the village from above, with its walls and towers. From there the view stretches over the lake and Valtenesi. In the historic centre, narrow alleys and stone houses tell the farming history of the village, among olive trees, vines and lemon groves.
Moniga is considered the cradle of Chiaretto, the rosé wine symbol of Lake Garda, now recognised with the Rosa Valtenesi designation. It is made from Groppello, Marzemino, Sangiovese and Barbera grapes, vinified as rosé. Fresh, floral, perfect with lake fish and local cheeses.
A few steps from the Relais you will find several wineries in Valtenesi where you can enjoy wine tasting among the olive trees. Ask us at reception for advice: we will point you to the best ones for your palate and your day.
